The Ambassador of Ukraine to the Republic of Moldova and the NIJ trainees: Dialogue and reflections on the current situation regarding refugees and diplomatic relations between Chisinau and Kiev

Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Ukraine to the Republic of Moldova, H.E. Marko Shevchenko and the Director of the General Inspectorate for Migration of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Mihail Voda, held today, April 27, 2023,  a public lecture for the trainees of the National Institute of Justice.

The event, orgamized at the National Institute of Justice, aimed to familiarize future judges and prosecutors with the rights of refugees in the context of temporary protection, as well as the status of diplomatic relations between Chisinau and Kiev.

“Such events are welcome and provide a unique opportunity for the Institute’s trainees to increase their knowledge of refugee rights in the context of temporary protection and to be more sensitive to the needs and challenges faced by refugees in our country,” said Ecaterina Popa, ad interim Director of the National Institute of Justice.

In the opening, with a greeting message came the Special Representative of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe for Migration and Refugees, Leyla Kayacik. She noted the exemplary solidarity of the Moldovan authorities and host communities in protecting people fleeing the war in Ukraine and welcomed the recent decision of the government to provide temporary protection to displaced persons, thus facilitating their access to education, jobs and basic services.

The topic aroused interest from future judges and prosecutors who asked questions and had the opportunity to exchange views on the topics addressed.

The public lecture was organized by the National Institute of Justice in partnership with the Council of Europe project “Strengthening the human rights protection of the refugees and migrants in the Republic of Moldova”

The project “Strengthening the human rights protection of refugees and migrants from the Republic of Moldova” aims to provide personalized support to the Republic of Moldova in the field of asylum and migration, including in light of the situation of refugees from Ukraine and is carried out by the Council of Europe in cooperation with the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, The Ministry of Education and Research, the National Institute of Justice, the Office of the Ombudsman, being financed and implemented within the framework of the Council of Europe Action Plan for the Republic of Moldova 2021-2024.
