Regional Conference “Strengthening Judicial Independence and Accountability: Regional Perspectives and Challenges”

21. 07. 2025

The Director of the National Institute of Justice, Ramona Strugariu, participated on Friday, July 18, 2025, in the regional conference dedicated to strengthening judicial independence and accountability. The event brought together representatives of judicial councils and key institutions from the Republic of Moldova, Romania, and Ukraine, alongside international experts, members of civil society and the academic environment, serving as an important platform for the exchange of experience and good practices, with a view to cooperation and promoting common values of democratic justice systems.

The NIJ Director’s intervention took place within the panel dedicated to the admission into the profession and the role of judicial training in maintaining professionalism. Ramona Strugariu spoke about the admission process currently underway at the NIJ and highlighted the need for a predictable judicial system in which the guarantees offered fully reflect the responsibility of the profession: “We have generations who are, on one hand, confident and enthusiastic, with a different mentality, on the other hand, quite concerned regarding the predictability of their profession, the way they will find their place in the justice system and how they will be able to contribute. I believe that decision-making institutions have a duty towards these young people – of predictability and security for the profession. Because now NIJ graduates are not very sure that they will be able to continue this profession. We want to move towards a more predictable system, with guarantees, similar to that of Romania’s INM.” Additionally, the NIJ Director conveyed a congratulatory message to magistrates on the occasion of their professional day, which is being marked for the first time this year.

The regional conference “Strengthening Judicial Independence and Accountability: Regional Perspectives and Challenges” was organized by the Superior Council of Magistracy of the Republic of Moldova, in partnership with the Council of Europe, within the framework of the joint EU-CoE project “Support for Justice Reform in the Republic of Moldova.“
