Exploring and sharing experiences in the field of writing and legal reasoning, during the study visit to the USA of NIJ representatives

Representatives of the National Institute of Justice, Ecaterina Popa, ad interim Director, and Cezara-Elena Polisca, head of the didactic-methodical and training of trainer’s section had a study visit to the United States. The delegation also included professors responsible for teaching the legal writing and argumentation course at the law faculties in the Republic of Moldova. The visit was part of the program „Strengthening research, writing and legal reasoning in Moldova”, implemented by the National Center for State Courts (NCSC) in collaboration with Willliam & Mary University in Williamsburg, being facilitated by the Criminal Justice and Law Enforcement Office (INL) of the US State Department.

During the study visit, numerous activities were carried out which aimed to develop legal writing skills in the process of preparing future representatives of the justice sector, as well as understanding how US universities approach this key discipline in training of young people for legal careers. Thus, were provided examples of exercises and strategies used in training of future professionals in the field, also the delegations were involved in interactive sessions, such as simulating legal writing lessons or familiarizing the William & Mary’s Moot Court Program, in order to improve the powers to argue and present position exposures.

Also, during a round table, Ecaterina Popa addressed topics related to admission, initial training and NIJ graduation, offering a comprehensive perspective on the functioning and objectives of the National Institute of Justice of the Republic of Moldova.

The study visit took place between August 26 and September 4, 2023 and allowed the exchange of knowledge and effective approaches in teaching legal and persuasive writing to improve the quality of training of future professionals from the field of law in our country.
