At the NIJ, the course support "Implementation of legislation on preventing and combating domestic violence" was launched

Around the 8th of March, at the National Institute of Justice was held the launch of a course support for the training of judges and prosecutors on “The implementation of legislation on preventing and combating domestic violence” . The volume was developed by the Women's Law Center in partnership with the National Institute of Justice in the framework of the project “Strengthening the response capacity for domestic violence cases of the Prosecutor's Office and the Judicial System of the Republic of Moldova”, with the financial support of the US Embassy in Republic of Moldova.

“This type of partnership encourages the development of effective cooperation between civil society and the Moldovan justice sector in dealing with cases of domestic violence and gender violence. [...] I encourage you to continue your efforts to implement the National Strategy and the Action Plan to combat violence against women” mentioned in his speech the US Ambassador to the Republic of Moldova, E.S. Dereck Hogan.

The course support was developed in order to strengthen the capacity of response to cases of domestic violence of the prosecutor's office and the judiciary in the Republic of Moldova by the authors Maria Ghervas, Judge, Supreme Court of Justice, Mariana Gornea, Prosecutor, General Prosecutor's Office, Irina Maxim, Judge, Chisinau Court, and Olga Pisarenco, lawyer, doctor in law, and coordinators of the edition, Diana Scobioală, doctor habilitatus in International Law, Director of the NIJ, and Alexandra Nica, Head of the Training and Research Department of the NIJ.

“This course support was developed in order to achieve fighting policies of all forms of violence, including violence against women, being necessary for legal professionals responsible of application of anti-violence legislation and the protection of fundamental human rights. In other words, the course support will strengthen the capacities of NIJ beneficiaries when it comes to domestic violence” stated Diana Scobioala, the Director of the National Institute of Justice.

The event was also attended by Natalia Vîlcu, Executive Director of the Women's Law Center, Victor Micu, President of the Superior Council of Magistracy, Inga Fortuna, Member of the Superior Council of Prosecutors, as well as the authors of the volume: Maria Ghervas, Judge at the Supreme Court, NIJ trainer, Mariana Gornea, Prosecutor, General Prosecutor's Office, NIJ trainer.

The speakers have emphasized that training is an effective way of preventing violence and enables the rise of awareness of violence against women and domestic violence among specialists, and a course support will serve as a useful tool for the training of judges and prosecutors for effective and unified implementation of legislation in the field. At the same time, the volume will contribute to enhancing the understanding of judges and prosecutors of the root causes of violence, the link between domestic violence and gender equality for a comprehensive approach to domestic violence and an in-depth knowledge of international standards and European judicial practice in the segment of preventing and combating domestic violence.
