Transfer of knowledge of experts of the US Department of the Commerce and State Agency on Intellectual Property (SAIP) to Moldavian judges

In order to strengthening knowledge in the field of intellectual property (IP) during two days October 24 – 25, 2022, a group of judges participated in a workshop on the examination of IP disputes. The training activity also aimed to exchange experiences and best practices in the field of enforcement of intellectual property rights.

In the opening of the event, spoke Eugeniu Rusu, General Director of SAIP,  Ecaterina Popa, ad interim Director of NIJ, and Shaya Tavaf, Attorney Advisor in the Commercial Law Development Program of the U.S. Department of Commerce (CLDP).

The training sessions were facilitated by the next experts: Chad Readler, judge at the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, Rodica Popescu, Head of Copyright Department of the State Agency on Intellectual Property and Andrei Moisei, principal consultant of the Communication, International Relations and European Integration Direction. In the workshop, were discussed subjects related to the current situation in the field of intellectual property and copyright in the USA and Republic of Moldova, adjudication of IP cases in USA, the evaluation of intellectual property, and introduction into procedural aspects regarding the calculation of damages in the field of IP etc. The practicality of the training was determined by case studies on the resolution of disputes in the field of copyright and trademarks.

The workshop was organized by the Commercial Law Development Program of the U.S. Department of Commerce, in partnership with the State Agency on Intellectual Property and the National Institute of Justice. The activity is a part of a series of actions jointly carried out by the NIJ and SAIP, based on the Memorandum of Cooperation, signed in April, 2013.
