„My home is your home too: Together in safety”: An activity to raise awareness among art school pupils

The National Institute of Justice and the School of Fine Arts „Alexei Sciusev” have started the fourth edition of the national contest of fine arts „My home is your home too: Together in safety”, in which children and young people aged between 11 to 21 are invited to participate. During the competition, several action are envisaged to guide the competitors in the creative process.

On Thursday, February 9, 2023, at the Alexei Sciusev School of Fine Arts, pupils and teachers of art schools participated in a public lesson through which they were familiarized with the phenomenon of migration and refugees in the context of the Ukrainian war, and later to transpose into their creations the themes of the contest.

From the very beginning of the event, the children were encouraged by Ecaterina Popa, ad interim director of the National Institute of Justice, and the Olimpiada Arbus-Spatari, director of the School of Fine Arts „Alexei Sciusev”, to participate in the drawing contest, launched with the purpose of promoting, through art, the culture of security and the development of empathy for refugee issues among young people.

During the lesson, the children learned from Tatiana Bedros, senior coordinator of the CoE project „Strengthening the protection of the human rights of refugees and migrants in the Republic of Moldova”, and Aurelia Bagrin, legal advisor of the  Law Centre of lawyers (LCL) about the support of the Council of Europe to our country to meet the needs of refugees and about the direct actions of the LCL in ensuring their access to legal and information services.

In discussions with pupils, the importance of solidarity with refugees, respect for their rights, as well as the need for social cohesion activities that would help them integrate into local communities was emphasized.

The national contest of fine arts „My home is your home too: Together in safety” is organized under the collaboration Agreement signed by the National Institute of Justice and the School of Fine Arts „Alexei Sciusev”. The partners of this year’s edition are the Council of Europe project „Strengthening the protection of the human rights of refugees and migrants from the Republic of Moldova”, the Law Centre of lawyers and  the National Intelligence and Security Institute „Bogdan, Întemeietorul Moldovei”.
